David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of works from the 1960s and 1970s by De Wain Valentine (b. 1936). A key member of what is often referred to as the Light and Space movement, Valentine is distinguished in particular by his in-depth understanding of synthetic materials and his ability to transform these industrial products into artworks that reveal his fascination with light, transparency, reflection, and surface. On view at 525 and 533 West 19th Street in New York, this exhibition will focus on the artist’s pioneering achievements in polyester resin and present the key forms that he articulated and returned to during this period. The exhibition, which is organized in cooperation with the artist, will include a selection of works that fully demonstrates Valentine’s range and virtuosity with his chosen material.

The Spirit of the Staircase

The Spirit of the Staircase presents new work by artists Beth Collar, Danilo Correale, Andrew Gillespie, James  Parkinson, Sue Tompkins and Marie Toseland. The work circles various processes of translation from a range of  linguistic, material and bodily positions.

When translated, information, whether within a digital file, an ancient artefact or a nuanced linguistic phrase, is lost  and new material and meanings are formed. I am interested in the time – whether seconds or centuries – that   something is in translation. As cultural artefacts travel they are put through a state of transposition, accumulating  different readings through time

“Fiction enables us to grasp reality and at the same time that which is veiled by reality.” – Marcel Broodthaers

In 1964 the writer Marcel Broodthaers decided to become a visual artist. Yet he retained an avid interest in language, its systems of meaning, and its poetry, which became integral components of his art. Maintaining a distance to the art scene, Broodthaers raised fundamental questions about art—about its media, about how the artwork is defined, and about its representation in museums. His works resist definitive art-historical classification and his oeuvre still stands as a persistent critique of the commercializing strategies of the art market today.

Influenced by the anti-authoritarian discourses of the 1960s, Broodthaers’ art is by no means divorced from the political dimensions of reality. He undertook a critical examination of the practices of collecting, archiving, and display, questioning the power of the institution to define and exposing the museum itself as a representational and ideological authority.
Broodthaers’ criticism is grounded in a probing investigation of the ordering systems of everyday life, the mechanisms involved in the production of meaning, and their place within a collective cultural memory. Extracting images, objects, words, and actions from their established contexts, the artist engendered a sense of uncertainty in which the contrast between the reality of visual images and the reality they depict becomes clearly visible. He revealed the agency of objects, which transcend our ability to grasp them through language, and emphasized the puzzling play of language itself, employing words as both visualized ideas and literal material. In an age characterized by our faith in the capacity of visual images to explain scientific and political phenomena, the oeuvre of Marcel Broodthaers, in which the unspoken dissonance of images, words, and meanings becomes apparent, assumes immense power and relevance.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of documenta, the Fridericianum is presenting a major survey exhibition featuring works from all of the artist’s creative periods. The exhibition encompasses early sculptures, films, slide projections, prints, and drawings as well as Le Corbeau et le Renard (1967–72), the Section Publicité of the Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles (1972), Miroir d'Époque Regency (1973), Éloge du sujet (1974), Dites partout que je l'ai dit (1974), Jardin d’Hiver II (1974), L’Entrée de l’Exposition (1974), Salle Blanche (1975), and DÉCOR, A Conquest by Marcel Broodthaers (1975).

In Favour of a Total Eclipse

http://www.enterstillhouse.com/entrance-stone

The Still House Group is an emerging arts organization, artist-run and based in New York.
Still House supports a unit of young artists, providing them with an environment to conceptualize, produce and exhibit their work. The strong emphasis on collaboration encourages members of the group to assist, critique and formally represent one another, ultimately creating a collective drive that balances the advancement of individual careers with the growth of Still House the entity.
Founded in 2007 by Isaac Brest and Alex Perweiler as an online viewing platform, Still House has produced numerous exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles and Miami. During 2010, the group conducted an eight month residency in an abandoned Department of Transportation office in TriBeCa, and has since built a permanent, multi-faceted arts institution currently based in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
This location serves as a hub for new work, a satellite environment to the art center of Manhattan where young artists engage in a space of their own.

Audrey Hepburn - La dolcezza dello sguardo

Nel Nord America, le opere d'arte più costose sono state create dall'artista americano Andy Warhol - il suo pezzo "Car Crash Silver" lo scorso anno è stato venduto per oltre 105 milioni dollari;

The Most Obscenely Expensive Paintings in the World, in One Map
30 June 2015
Picasso’s Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) was recently sold at a Christie’s auction for the highest auction price ever recorded for a piece of artwork. The work, painted in 1955, just sold for a whopping $160 million plus $19.35 million in commission paid to Christie’s. Amazingly, the last time the painting was sold it went for only $31.9 million, which means that the seller made a $130 million profit. This is part of a growing trend: according to Christie’s, global sales of impressionist and modern art were $1.2 billion in 2014, a 19% increase over 2013.

In North America, the most expensive art works were created by the American artist Andy Warhol – his Silver Car Crash piece last sold for over $105 million; Canadian artist Lawren Stewart Harris, whose The Old Stump, Lake Superior piece is worth $3.3 million; Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, whose Trovador piece is valued at $7.2 million; and Cuban artist Wilfredo Lam, whose piece called ídolo (Oya/Divinité de l’air et de la mort) last sold for over $4.5 million.

But the majority of the World’s most expensive works were created throughout Europe. Most notably, Spain’s Picasso painted Les Femmes d’Alger; France’s Claude Monet painted Le Bassin aux Nymphéas, which was last purchased for $80.5 million; Britain’s Francis Bacon painted the famous Three Studies of Lucian Freud, worth more than $142 million; Norwegian artist Edward Munch’s The Scream is valued at $120 million; Dutch painter Van Gogh’s Portrait du Dr. Gachet is valued at $82.5 million; Gerhard Richter from Germany painted Abstraktes bild, now worth $46 million; Italian Amedeo Modigliani’s Nu assis sur un divan (La belle romaine) is worth almost $69 million; Gustav Klimt of Austria painted Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II, now valued at $88 million; Belgium’s Peter Paul Ruben painted Massacre of the Innocents, which is worth almost $77 million; and Russia’s Kasimir Severinovich Malevich’s Suprematist Composition is worth $60 million. It is interesting to note the difference in styles between Western and Eastern Europe.

Asia is the birthplace of some pricey artwork too, most notably in China, where Zhang Daqian painted Lotus and Mandarin Ducks, now worth $24.5 million. The most expensive pieces of art created throughout Asia tend to be representative of local cultures.

The most expensive piece of art produced in South America is Roberto Matta’s La Révolte des Contraires (painted in Chile), now worth $5 million. Matta’s painting is followed by Lygia Clark of Brazil’s painting called Contra Relevo (Objeto N. 7), which is worth $2.2 million; Fernando Botero’s The Musicians, painted in Colombia and now with $2 million; and Joaquín Torres García’s Constructif Mysterieux, painted in Uruguay and valued at $1.7 million.

All of these maps show just how much cultural diversity there is around the World. However, they are also useful for illustrating the accumulation of wealth in rich nations. Art tends to be more highly valued by people living in countries with larger economies. Often art is valued not just for its aesthetic qualities or for the meaning behind it, but also for its ability to retain value and act as a safe investment vehicle. More and more, the superrich are relying on rare works as part of their investment portfolios. This might be having profound impacts on the wider economy: some have speculated that bouts of increased art sales actually signal overheated equity markets. Whether or not this is true, it is clear that the market for rare art is alive and well, and showing no signs of slowing.

Our research contains paintings sold in public auctions with reported prices, other paintings such as Gauguin painting sold privately with unconfirmed amounts are not included

Data on art prices is tough to find, and many countries do not have any data at all -- if you know of any top-dollar pieces of artwork made by artists in your country or have questions/comments, drop us a line. We are open to corrections or suggestions.

UPDATE: The painting shown in Hungary is not correct. We will issue this mistake in shortly.

Chercher le garçon

Didier Courbot Needs (Rome) 1999 Photographie couleur, 94 x 120 cm  FNAC 02-329 /© droits réservés/ CNAP/ Photo Florian Kleinefenn.

Dan Finsel The Space Between You and Me 2012 Vidéo, 28’54’’ Courtesy l’artiste et Richard Telles Fine Art, Los Angeles
